Named for the English town of Stourbridge, it was incorporated on June 24, 1738. Sturbridge provided young soldiers for the Revolutionary War, and was afterwards settled as a farming community. However in the 19th century, harnessing water power from the Quinebaug river drove Sturbridge's early industry: cotton milling.
