Jon's scholarly activities and research interests focus on the development of novel neural network-based solutions to problem domains such as bioinformatics, text analytics/NLP, time-series processing of financial markets. He is particularly interested in the development of self-learning behaviours within recurrent neural networks for modelling complex time-series, knowledge extraction from neural networks and intelligent feature extraction and selection in deep feature mining systems for medical diagnostic and prognostic systems. HealthManagement.org featured a recent article concerning Jon's exciting research with Dr Abeer Alzubaidi and Prof Ahmad Lotfi concerning the application of deep learning to discover important biomarkers for breast cancer.
Jon holds a BSc (H) Computer Systems degree and a PhD in Corpus-based Connectionist Parsing (neural network-based solutions to text analytics) from NTU. He also holds a PG Cert. in Higher Education (Dist) and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and continues to perform research and sessional teaching in computer science.
