Adekunle M. Adesina

Dr. Adesina received his MBBS degree from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria and Ph.D. (Molecular Neuro-oncology) from McGill University, Montreal, Canada. He had postgraduate clinical training in Anatomic Pathology and Neuropathology at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria and the University of Vermont, Surgical Pathology, Cytology and Molecular Pathology at the Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia and Research Fellowship at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research and Montreal Neurological Institute, Montreal, Canada. Dr. Adesina has over 25 years experience in diagnostic pathology. He also has global experience and involvement in pathology education, and coordinates the WAD-IAP-USCAP School of Pathology, serves/served as leading editor of the Atlas of Pediatric brain tumors, publisher - Springer, Chief Editor for the Neuropathology section of the e-pathology / e-medicine (WebMD / medscape) textbook and as a member of the Test Development and Advisory Committee of the American Board of Pathology in Molecular Genetic Pathology. He is a recipient of the award as the first Benjamin Oluwakayode and Olabopo Osuntokun Visiting Professorship/endowed Chair in the Neurosciences, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria in 2008. Dr. Adesina's research interest is in understanding the molecular determinants of neoplastic transformation and the nature of deregulation of FoxG1 cross-linked signal transduction in pediatric brain tumors with over 100 peer reviewed manuscripts and book chapters. Dr Adesina serves as the Chair for Pathology for the African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC), member of the AORTIC Council and a member of the IAP Education Committee.

Angela Mutuku

Angela joins us as part of the NCI PAR 15-155 project "Improving Anatomical Pathology in Sub-Saharan Africa to Support Cancer Care", where she serves as the regional project coordinator. She has completed her Master of Science degree in management with an emphasis in Health Administration from the University of Glamorgan- South Wales and has a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Nairobi, Kenya. Prior, Angela worked in the National health system - UK (NHS- trust) where she led and coordinated a multidisciplinary team towards provision of quality services for patients in accordance to the health and social care quality commission. Most recently, Angela has worked with RCPATH in delivery of a DFID funded project, focusing on the improvement of clinical decision-making and increased patient safety through measures designed to raise the standards and quality of specific laboratory services by and tests that support the diagnosis and management of health conditions related to Millennium Development Goals 4.1, 5.2 and 6.3.

Ann Nelson

Dr. Ann Nelson graduated from the Autonomous University of Guadalajara Medical School in 1978 and received board certification in anatomic and clinical pathology in 1984. She did post-residency training in infectious and tropical disease pathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (1984-85). She was a pioneer in descriptive pathology of HIV/AIDS in Africa, including five years (1986 to 1991) at Projet SIDA, an international AIDS project Democratic Republic of the Congo and a Fulbright Fellowship (2008-2009) at Makerere University College of Health Sciences, Uganda and Muhimbili University for Health and Allied Science, Tanzania. In addition to diagnostic pathology, the primary focus of her work is capacity building in anatomic pathology diagnostic laboratories and linking anatomic pathology to ongoing clinical and epidemiologic research projects in the respective countries to create functioning diagnostic and research capacity in Sub-Saharan Africa that is sustainable. She has extensive experience in networking across disciplines and in seminar/conference organization. Over the past 5 years she worked with a group of collaborators to do a comprehensive survey of pathology workforce, workload, infrastructure and education in sub-Saharan Africa. Currently, she is working with the Presidents of the African Divisions of the International Academy of Pathology on the formation of an African IAP Assembly. She has authored more than 70 peer-reviewed publications.

Dr Azza Ahmed

Dr Azza Ahmed is an Assistant Professor of pathology at the Omdurman Islamic University Sudan. She is also the Head of deparment in Histopathology and Cytology at the National Health Laboratories Khartoum Sudan. Dr Ahmed is an active member of the International Academy of Cytopatholog (MIAC) and is a Fellow of the Arab Board of Anatomic Pathology. Dr Ahmeds also heads the examination committee at the Sudan Medical Specialization Board and is a member of the Histopathology training council. Her main Interestes are in Histopathology annd Cytopathology and would like to make a contribution towards the advancement of Pathology in Africa.

Dr. Andrew Field

Dr. Andrew Field graduated from medicine at University of New South Wales in 1978, completed his FRCPA anatomical pathology training in 1985, and then pursued further training in cytopathology at John Hopkins, Karolinska and Flinders Hospitals. He has been in leadership roles in cytopathology nationally and internationally and is current vice president of the International Academy of Cytology and serves on the IAC Task Force for promoting education and professional development in cytology in developing countries. One of his crucial roles from 2013 onwards is establishing cytology tutorials, two per year, in developing countries (He has personally organized and taught at 14 sessions in 7 countries since 2007). He is committed to fostering the development of cytopathology in the developing world. Cytology generally but particularly FNB which offers a rapid, outpatient, inexpensive and accurate biopsy technique with minimal infrastructure requirements, is crucial in the development and delivery of pathology diagnostic services in the developing world. Cytology services run by trained pathologists can have an immediate cost effective impact on diagnostic services, particularly in the battle against cervical and breast cancer. His major diagnostic, teaching, publication, writing and research interests are in FNB cytology, infectious diseases including AIDS, and gastrointestinal surgical pathology. In 2011, he received the Papanicolaou Society Award for Interventional Cytopathologist of the Year.

Dr. Carla Carrilho

Dr. Carla Carrilho graduated in 1992 from the Faculty of Medicine of the Eduardo Mondlane University. She became an anatomic pathologist in 2000. She obtained her master and the PhD degrees from the University of Oporto, Portugal in 1998 and 2005 respectively. Head of the Department of Pathology of the main teaching hospital in Mozambique since 2003 became Associated Professor of Pathology in 2006.She is responsible for residence training program in Anatomical Pathology in the Mozambican College of Pathology. She is part of the team of the MEPI program in Mozambique. Her major areas of interest are cancer registry, HPV and autopsy pathology. She has published several articles mainly on HPV and genital cancer, H. pylori in gastric pathology, and cancer and maternal mortality.

Dr. John Flanigan

Dr. John Flanigan received an M.D. from the University of Maryland and trained in Internal Medicine at Cleveland Metrohealth/Case Western Reserve. After a decade of clinical practice and administration in a rural hospital, he was able to spend four years traveling internationally developing an interest in resource appropriate healthcare delivery. His experience includes fourteen years practicing emergency medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine promoting the integration of emergency care, inpatient acute care, and outpatient chronic disease management for an urban population. Dr. Flanigan joined the National Cancer Institute Center for Global Health in 2012. His interests include cervical cancer vaccination and screening, improving cancer diagnosis in resource limited settings, and the coordination of the Global NCD Action Plan. He received an NIH Directors merit award for his activities in 2013 and is an advocate for the Center of Global Health's vision to promote cooperative research internationally to support an integrated, evidence based, efficient response to the growing burden of noncommunicable diseases worldwide.

Dr. Modupe Kuti

Dr. Modupe Kuti is an academic staff of the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Nigeria and a honorary consultant chemical pathologist at the University College Hospital, Ibadan. He received his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Ibadan in 1994, and obtained a Fellowship in Laboratory Medicine from the West African College of Physicians in 2004. Dr. Kuti is an auditor of the African Society for Laboratory Medicine and has been involved in the WHO Afro Stepwise Laboratory Improvement Program towards Accreditation (SLIPTA) initiative in Nigeria. He is also a trainer under the Strengthening Laboratory Management towards Accreditation (SLMTA) program. He has been involved in the drafting of national guidelines for laboratory medicine in Nigeria and in the development of pathology curricula, both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has developed and conducted training programs aimed at improving the competency of Pathology Fellows with regards to quality management. His special interests are in quality management system, the laboratory-clinic interface, and in lipids. He brings a focus on formalized engagement with the users of pathology services at the laboratory-clinical interface.

Dr. Robert Goldin

Dr. Robert Goldin is a Professor of Liver and Gastro-Intestinal Pathology at the Imperial College Faculty of Medicine, and is a consultant histopathologist at the Imperial College NHS Trust. He also works with the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in Oxford. He completed his undergraduate training at the University of Zimbabwe and his post-graduate training at St. Mary's Hospital, in London, and at the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Shahin Sayed graduated from the University of Nairobi in 1997 with an MMEd in General Pathology. She has since been in practice in Histo/Cyto Pathology at the Departments of Pathology at Kenyatta National Hospital and from 2005 at the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUHN) She has been a recipient of several short-term fellowships and attachments at Stellenbosch University, (Cytopathology) Academic Medical Centre, Amsterdam (Medical renal diseases), University of Siena (Lymphomas), and Mass General Hospital (Breast Pathology). Her main research interest has been Breast Cancers in which she has two international grants as PI in collaboration with the University of Alabama, Birmingham and Universities of Cape Town and Kwa Zulu Natal. She has also collaborated in Lymphoma research with Prof Lorenzo Leoncini (University of Siena) and Dr. Aliyah Sohani at Mass General Hospital. She has over 15 publications in her areas of research. She is currently the Section Head of Histopathology at AKUHN where she is also actively involved in residency training and research and supervision of resident dissertations. She was elected the Secretary General of the College of East, Central and Southern Africa in Kampala in 2010. She is scheduled to pursue her doctorate studies with the University of Cape Town in her area of research interest.

Dr. Zahir Moloo is the Regional Clinical Director and a Laboratory Medicine and Regional Pathologist at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi. Dr. Moloo graduated with his undergraduate degree in Medicine from the University of Dar-es-salaam in 1976. She has been brought up in Harvard University as she did medical school, residency training, and fellowship there. Professor Lorenzo Leoncini completed an Internship and pathology training at the Institute of Pathological Anatomy and Histology, University of Siena in 1980. He was appointed Full Professor in 2000, also at University of Siena. His international experience includes research at the University of Bern (1981), Institute Gustave Roussy in Paris (1987), Free University of Berlin (1988), and University of Cape Town (1993). He has ongoing projects In Nairobi Kenya on HPV viral oncogenesis and in multiple sites in SSA on Burkitt's and other high-grade B-cell lymphomas. Olabode Peter Oluwole is an Associate Professor of Pathology at the University of Abuja in Nigeria. Prof Martin Hale

Prof Hale is fully committed to undergraduate and postgraduate training, recognising that good undergraduate education is a prerequisite to developing good postgraduate programmes. His educational initiatives have included improvement of postgraduate training in sub-Saharan Africa developed through the International Academy of Pathology. A significant milestone was his successful bid preparation and subsequent hosting of the international Congress of the international Academy of pathology in Cape Town, South Africa in 2012, a first for the African continent. The objective of this meeting was to enhance pathology education on the African continent. This was an overwhelming success with over 330 delegates from Africa attending, 150 of them being supported by bursaries sourced through the IAP. Prof Hale has been involved with a number of collaborative research projects over the years including projects that have been funded by prestigious funding agencies. He recognises that postgraduate training cannot be complete without a research component. Prof Martin Hale is a specialist anatomical pathologist who has spent his entire career working in the public sector both in Zimbabwe and South Africa. He has extensive experience in diseases that are prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly infectious disease and malignancy, inclusive of HIV. In particular he has an interest in HIV related malignancy, and the interplay between co-infection with HIV and other infections. Other interests include the changing epidemiology of disease as the local lifestyle of the population changes over time.

Richard Byers

Richard Byers received general medical training, including an intercalated BSc in Anatomy and MSc in Cell and Structural Biology, trained as a histopathologist, and completed his PhD in molecular biology at the University of Manchester. Since then he has developed a diagnostic and research interest in haematopathology and a specialist diagnostic clinical interest in leukaemia and lymphoma. He is the General Secretary of the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland, Reader in Pathology at the University of Manchester and the lead haematopathologist for Manchester Royal Infirmary, providing bone marrow and lymph node biopsy reporting. His clinical and research work is increasingly focused on the development and implementation of novel diagnostics at service and research levels. His University teaching work is focused on the delivery of the Intercalated BSc in Pathology, and MSc in Molecular Pathology, for both of which he is director and responsible for course content, delivery, and assessment. Richard recently completed a month long teaching placement in histopathology at University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia.

Sebastian Lucas

Professor Sebastian Lucas graduated from Oxford (1970) and London (1973) universities. He entered UK pathology training and obtained the MRCPath diploma in 1978. Work on infectious & tropical diseases in London was followed by 2 years in Nairobi at the Kenyatta National Hospital, and 15 years providing histopathology diagnostic services to hospitals in Africa by post from London. From 1986-95 he was the leprosy tissue diagnostician for many countries in Africa and Asia. In 1991-2 he worked with the CDC Project RETRO-CI in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, performing the only large epidemiological autopsy study of the clinical pathology of HIV disease in adults and children in Africa. He became professor of pathology in 1995 at Guys & St Thomas' Hospital, retiring in 2012. In addition to infectious disease diagnostics and HIV, he is an expert in the pathology of sickle cell disease and maternal mortality (and is the chief pathology assessor for the British Isles' confidential enquiries into such deaths). Autopsy quality standards and the utility of autopsy for epidemiology and public health is also a current activity. He chaired the Royal College of Pathologists working parties on bringing autopsy practice up to date for the 21st century. He still lectures in UK and internationally, writes, and mentors the ongoing infectious disease pathology consultation service run from St Thomas' hospital. Since 1980 he has visited more than 20 countries in sub-Saharan Africa on professional visits. He has over 150 publications the above subjects.

Susan C. Lester

Dr. Susan Lester received her Ph.D. in genetics at the University of Wisconsin and her M.D. from Harvard Medical School. She trained in pathology at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and has been Chief of Breast Pathology Services for over 20 years. She has served on committees for the College of American Pathology, the American Joint Committee on Cancer, and the World Health Organization. She was the chairperson of the CAP breast cancer review panel during the development of the first standardized reporting protocol for DCIS as well as a major revision of the invasive cancer protocol. Dr. Lester is well known for the Manual of Surgical Pathology, as well as textbooks on breast pathology and intraoperative consultation, and numerous chapters including Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease. A main area of interest of hers is developing internet teaching resources to support and augment on-site workshops developed by ASAP.

Timothy R. Rebbeck

Dr. Tim Rebbeck holds a PhD in human Genetics from the University of Michigan and Masters degrees in Epidemiology and Statistics. He was named a Fulbright Specialist to develop cancer research centers of excellence in Africa. He serves on Executive Counsel of AORTIC (African Organization for Research and Teaching in Cancer). The goal of Dr. Rebbeck's research work is to understand the complex causes of cancer. He uses a multidisciplinary approach to identify and characterize genes and other biomarkers associated with human cancer, and to determine how these biological factors interact with environmental exposures in the etiology and progression of cancer. His work focuses on cancers of the breast, ovary, and prostate, with a particular emphasis on global health disparities. He leads multiple international research consortia that leverage the diversity of global populations to better inform the etiology and prevention of common cancers worldwide.
