The Virtual Bird is currently a procedural trainer meaning that you cannot count your time towards currency or a new rating. If there is enough local demand it can easily be certified as a Basic Aviation Training Device. At this level of certification 2.5 hrs of simulator time can count towards private pilot training and 10 hours towards instrument. With new FAA rules you'll be able to log instrument currency and experience without a flight instructor present. Even without this certification, there are many ways to gain experience and perfect technique that will result in savings of time and money and make you a better pilot.
