Bone Graft

If the bone in your jaw is too soft, or it isn't thick enough, you might require a bone graft prior to dental implant placement. The strong chewing force puts strong pressure on the jawbone, and if it is too small or too weak, it can cause the implant surgery to fail. A bone graft may be necessary to create a strong base for a denture or implant. What is a bone graft? If you have lost a tooth and the gap is left untreated for an extended period, the jawbone below that space will gradually wear down (resorb) because it stops regenerating itself. The jawbone needs the stimulation of chewing forces and teeth to support in order to remain strong. The bone level will decrease as the bone resorbs, and the gum tissue in the area decreases as well. When patients need dentures or dental implants, but the bone has already started to decrease below the gum tissue, a bone grafting procedure may be necessary. The bone can be rebuilt and the tooth socket restored with a bone grafting procedure, providing the necessary foundation for dental implants or dentures.
