The Muskegon Museum of Art, originally known as the Hackley Art Gallery, was founded in 1912 through a bequest from Charles Hackley, a prominent lumber baron who invested heavily in Muskegon's post-lumber boom recovery. Although Hackley did not live to see the gallery built, he left a $150,000 expendable trust in his will for the acquisition of "pictures of the best kind," known as the Hackley Picture Fund.
