Aylin Caliskan is an Assistant Professor at the University of Washington Information School and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering. Previously, Caliskan was an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at George Washington University. Caliskan studies the underpinning mechanisms of information transfer between human society and artificial intelligence (AI). Specifically, Caliskan's research interests lie in AI ethics, AI bias, computer vision, natural language processing, and machine learning. By developing transparency enhancing algorithms that detect and quantify human-like associations and biases learned by machines, Caliskan investigates the reasoning behind AI representations and decisions. Caliskan's publication in Science demonstrated how semantics derived from language corpora contain human-like biases. Her work on machine learning's impact on fairness and privacy received the best talk and best paper awards, and she was selected as a Rising Star in EECS at Stanford University. Caliskan holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Drexel University's College of Computing & Informatics and a Master of Science in Robotics from the University of Pennsylvania. Caliskan was a Postdoctoral Researcher and a Fellow at Princeton University's Center for Information Technology Policy. Caliskan was named a Nonresident Fellow in Governance Studies at the Brookings Institution in 2021, and in 2023, she was recognized as one of the 100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics and honored with an IJCAI Early Career Spotlight.

Christina Mangurian, MD, MAS, is Vice Dean for Academic Affairs. She is responsible for overseeing all academic affairs in the School of Medicine, including the recruitment, development and advancement of a diversified academic workforce. She is also responsible for overseeing innovative programs for faculty orientation, career development, and leadership training.

Cora Palmer, Medical Education Communications Manager, guides communications for the Vice Dean for Medical Education's Office including leadership messages. She develops communication strategy and messaging for new medical education initiatives, produces marketing collateral for Admissions and outreach, and authors content for medical education newsletters, websites, and news stories.
As vice dean for research, David Morgan, PhD, serves as the dean's primary liaison to the school's discovery community and its diverse research programs. He oversees internal funding programs as well as the school's research training programs for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. In addition to his role as vice dean, he is professor in the Department of Physiology, with an active research program in a laboratory on the Mission Bay campus.
Dr. Talmadge E. King, Jr. has been dean of the UCSF School of Medicine and vice chancellor for medical affairs since July of 2015. He began his career at UCSF in 1997 as chief of Medical Services at Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. From 2006 to 2015, he served as chair of the UCSF Department of Medicine, the largest department in the school, with approximately 29 percent of the school's full-time faculty.
A physician-scientist, King's research has focused on inflammatory and immunologic lung injury. He is best known for his pioneering work in the management of the interstitial pneumonias, a scarring process that often leads to death. His bibliography comprises more than 300 publications and he has co-edited eight books, including the acclaimed reference book, "Interstitial Lung Disease," now in its fifth edition.
King graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College and earned his medical degree at Harvard Medical School, followed by a residency at Emory University Affiliated Hospitals in Atlanta, Ga. and a pulmonary fellowship at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver.
He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Association of American Physicians, American Clinical and Climatological Association and the Fleischner Society. He is a master of the American College of Physicians and fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians. He won the 2007 Trudeau Medal, the highest honor of the American Lung Association and American Thoracic Society.

Deborah Reiter, Administrative Director, Management Unit, has been in the Dean's Office more than 20 years and is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Management Unit. She is involved in many of the ongoing projects and programs for the Dean's Office and the School of Medicine. She staffs School of Medicine committees, oversees the coordination of leadership recruitments conducted by the Dean's Office (e.g., Chair and Director positions), assists in managing the SOM Leadership Development program, as well as other programs and projects for the School. Dr. Jeffrey Critchfield is the Interim Vice Dean of the UCSF School of Medicine at ZSFG and Professor of Medicine at UCSF in the Division of Hospital Medicine at ZSFG, where he serves as Chief Medical Experience Officer and Medical Director of Risk Management. After an early focus on basic science at NIH and UCSF, Dr. Critchfield's diverse roles with trainees, faculty, and SFDPH staff have centered on improving the care of hospitalized patients across the care continuum and into the community. In addition to his faculty roles, Dr. Critchfield's prior leadership roles include ZSFG Chief of Staff (2006-2008), founding Chief of the Division of Hospital Medicine at the General (2008), and Chair of the UCSF Committee on Academic Personnel (2018-2019). Additionally, he served as a SFDPH HICS Commander at the COVID Command Center and collaborated with city department heads to coordinate San Francisco's pandemic response (2020).

Dr. Peter Lee is Corporate Vice President of Research and Incubations at Microsoft. He leads Microsoft Research and incubates new research-powered products and lines of business in areas such as artificial intelligence, computing foundations, health, and life sciences. He speaks and writes widely on science and technology trends. Before joining Microsoft in 2010, he was at DARPA, where he established a new technology office that created operational capabilities in machine learning, data science, and computational social science. Prior to that, he was a professor and the head of the computer science department at Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Lee is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and serves on the Boards of Directors of several institutes for the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, the Brotman Baty Institute for Precision Medicine, and the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine. He served on President Obama's Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity and led studies for PCAST and the National Academies. He has testified before both the US House Science and Technology Committee and the US Senate Commerce Committee. With Carey Goldberg and Dr. Isaac Kohane, he is the coauthor of the book, "The AI Revolution in Medicine: GPT-4 and Beyond."

Elena Fuentes-Afflick, MD, MPH has served as Vice Dean of ZSFG since 2022 - managing the ZSFG Dean's Office enterprise to successfully collaborate with a wide array of individuals and organizations throughout UCSF and the City and County of San Francisco. Prior to that time, Dr. Fuentes-Afflick served as Vice Dean for Academic Affairs for the UCSF School of Medicine for 10 years. During her tenure, Dr. Fuentes-Afflick has been instrumental in diversifying the pediatric faculty at ZSFG and cultivating an environment that encourages belonging and respect for all. Her passion for diversity has carried through in her health-equity research, as well as her numerous lectures and workshops, but it is truly impressive how she has carried these principles into true action and results. Her efforts have not only amplified the department's reputation but have also paved the way for a more equitable academic culture. Dr. Fuentes-Afflick has left an indelible mark on the institution, embodying the very essence of Holly Smith - exceptional service embellished with compassion and integrity.

Joshua Adler, MD is vice dean for clinical affairs. He has a direct relationship to the clinical department chairs to ensure the alignment of the clinical, research and education missions of UCSF and physician involvement in operational decision making. Dr. Adler is executive vice president for physician services at UCSF Health, a practicing internist and a professor of clinical medicine. Prior to his current position, he served as chief medical officer at UCSF Medical Center and medical director of ambulatory care at UCSF.
Dr. Adler earned a medical degree at UC San Diego Medical School and completed a residency in internal medicine at UCSF, followed by a chief resident year at the San Francisco Veteran Affairs Medical Center.

Karen Hauer, MD, PhD, is Vice Dean for Education and Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She is an active researcher in medical education and a research mentor for fellows, residents and students, with a focus on competency-based medical education, learner assessment, coaching and remediation. In 2015, she completed a PhD in Medical Education through a joint program with UCSF and the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. She earned her undergraduate degree at Stanford University, and completed medical school and internal medicine residency and chief residency at UCSF. She is a practicing general internist in primary care.
Karin Wong, Director, Space Strategy, works closely with Vice Dean Bruce Wintroub to advise Dean King on all projects, policies, and operations related to space management. With the assistance of Adrian Miu, Karin also staffs the SOM Space Committee, participates in the Campus Space Workgroup, facilitates campus construction and redevelopment projects, and assesses department space use/requests. There is never a dull day in the world of space management, but Karin is grateful for the opportunity to work closely with thoughtful school, campus, and department leaders to advocate for the highest and best use of our shared space resources.
Karla Goodbody, Affiliations, Outreach and Compliance Coordinator for the School of Medicine, works directly with the Vice Dean, Neal Cohen, on managing faculty members' outside professional activities and University-sponsored service and affiliation agreements. For foreign-trained physicians, she coordinates the application process with the Medical Board of California. Karla works closely with the other members of the SOM Academic Affairs team. A self-described UCSF nerd, Karla gains immense satisfaction from working with thoughtful faculty and staff across the campus.

Margot Kushel, MD is an innovator who thinks beyond science to improve our community, particularly the lives of those impacted by social forces such as homelessness. Dr. Kushel consistently goes above and beyond the parameters of her University appointment to advocate at local, state, and federal levels for initiatives that ameliorate the burden of homelessness. As founder and now Director of the Benioff Homelessness Initiative, she will leave a legacy of laser-like focus on the needs of those with housing instability or homelessness. She is also training a whole new generation of learners who will carry on both her research on underserved populations and her history of fierce advocacy for their wellbeing. Not only does her high-quality and impactful research inform and support our shared commitment to social justice, but that commitment also permeates her roles as division chief, teacher, and mentor. She is known for her ability to listen actively and deeply and provide both professional and personal support.

Maye Chrisman, MBA, is vice dean for administration and finance. She directs the financial, administrative and clinical business affairs of the school, overseeing business operations, personnel management and strategic planning.
Prior to joining the Dean's Office, Ms. Chrisman served as chief financial officer, and then associate chair for finance and administration, in the Department of Medicine. She previously worked in strategy consulting and educational technology. Ms. Chrisman earned an MBA from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and graduated magna cum laude with an AB in economics from Harvard College. She received the 2014 UCSF Chancellor Award for Exceptional University Management.
Michelle Mourad, MD serves as Vice Chair for Clinical Care and Value for the Department of Medicine and has been instrumental in enhancing the clinical services within the department. Her strategic vision and negotiations have led to significant improvements in multiple clinical divisions, and she is widely recognized for her ability to drive growth and improvement across the health system. Dr. Mourad is also an exceptional leader during times of crisis, as evidenced by her work during the COVID-19 pandemic to facilitate patient access to testing and treatment. Her commitment to mentorship and education is evident in her extensive involvement in quality improvement and patient safety training for both residents and faculty, both at UCSF and nationally. She is a thought leader on the harmonization of a productive academic/clinical career and is an inspiration to many.

Neal H. Cohen, MD, (UCSF '71) is the vice dean responsible for international medical services, risk management, compliance and related special projects. Dr. Cohen is a professor of anesthesia and medicine.

Olivia Herbert, MBA, is Vice Dean and Chief of Staff in the Dean's Office. She works directly with Dean Talmadge E. Padric McCaig, Office Administrator for the Dean's Office Management Unit, serves as the front desk liaison, is responsible for reception coverage as well as managing overall functions of the office environment. He supports the School of Medicine Space Team and manages the calendar for the Vice Dean for Administration and Finance, Maye Chrisman, and provides calendar support for the Associate Dean and Chief of Staff, Olivia Herbert. Stephanie Belger joined the School of Medicine Dean's Office in 2005 as the Manager of Special Events. In her almost two decades of service, she transformed her role to Director of Strategic Initiatives, managing some of the School's most impactful programs, including the Annual School of Medicine Retreat, Differences Matter, Watson Scholars, Chairs and Directors Committee on Diversity, and the School of Medicine's Strategic Plan. Stephanie is relied upon by leadership, faculty, and staff alike for her deep programmatic expertise, understanding of the School, and creative approaches to challenges. She strives to continuously improve approaches to projects and problems by identifying opportunities to increase impact and developing strategies to enhance the work. When asked about working with Stephanie, "joy" is the word used most often. Stephanie is unfailingly hopeful, optimistic, unflappable, and calm.

Stephanie Belger, Director, Strategic Initiatives, leads the planning and implementation of short- and long-term School of Medicine initiatives. She provides strategic leadership by designing, implementing and managing complex programs spanning across departments and the university. Her specific projects and programs include Differences Matter; the SOM Strategic Plan; annual Leadership Retreat and other SOM events; leadership driven initiatives; and faculty and staff awards.

Stuart Russell is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of California at Berkeley, holder of the Smith-Zadeh Chair in Engineering, and Director of the Center for Human-Compatible AI and the Kavli Center for Ethics, Science, and the Public. He is a recipient of the IJCAI Computers and Thought Award, the IJCAI Research Excellence Award, and the ACM Allen Newell Award. From 2012-14 he held the Chaire Blaise Pascal in Paris. He is an Honorary Fellow of Wadham College, Oxford, an Andrew Carnegie Fellow, an AI2050 Senior Fellow, and a Fellow of AAAI, ACM, and AAAS. His book "Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach" (with Peter Norvig) is the standard text in AI, used in over 1500 universities in 135 countries. His research covers a wide range of topics in artificial intelligence, with a current emphasis on the long-term future of artificial intelligence and its relation to humanity. He has developed a new global seismic monitoring system for the nuclear-test-ban treaty and is currently working to ban lethal autonomous weapons.
