PORTLAND VETERINARY EMERGENCY AND SPECIALTY CARE - Key Persons
Dr. Eifler performed her Bachelor of Science at the University of New Brunswick, Saint John in 1994 and was accepted early into the Veterinary Medicine Program at the University of Prince Edward Island due to outstanding academic achievement in 1997. She received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2001 with honors. Dr. Eifler then went on to complete a general small animal internship at the University of Saskatchewan in 2002 and an Emergency Fellowship at Michigan State University in 2003. From 2003 to 2005 she practiced general veterinary medicine in Michigan while also participating in a research project funded by the NIH evaluating gene therapy for degenerative retinal disease in dogs.
Dr. Eifler attended the University of Missouri from 2005-2008 where she completed her residency in Veterinary Neurology/Neurosurgery and achieved the status of board certification in Veterinary Neurology at that time. Dr. Eifler is also one of the first veterinary neurologists to attain certification in veterinary neurosurgery. During her residency she was fortunate enough to work with the clinicians and researchers who both discovered the gene that causes degenerative myelopathy and developed the genetic test for this condition, an honor to her memory of Max.
Dr. Adam Shoelson graduated from the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. Following graduation, he completed a one-year rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Tufts Veterinary Emergency Treatment & Specialties in Walpole, Massachusetts. Dr. Shoelson then returned to the Cummings School at Tufts to complete a residency in small animal internal medicine. He is particularly interested in endocrinology, including diabetes, and the management of elderly cats and dogs with multiple diseases.
Dr. Adam Shoelson and his wife have recently moved to Maine. They are enjoying exploring the area's numerous outdoor activities and Portland's lively restaurant scene. They have two orange cats named Otto and Pepe. Dr. Shoelson is an avid New England sports fan and enjoys scuba diving and underwater photography.
Dr. Amanda Landry completed a bachelor's degree from the University of Connecticut in 2013 and attended Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 2017. Dr. Landry spent three years on the island of St. Kitts. She completed a one clinical year in London, England at the Royal Veterinary College. After graduation, she completed a one-year internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts in 2018.
Dr. Landry moved to Maitland, Florida to complete a one-year specialty internship in medical neurology and neurosurgery at Affiliated Veterinary Specialists. The facility is now called Blue Pearl Specialty and Emergency Hospital. She stayed there an additional three years to complete a residency in Small Animal Neurology, which she completed in July 2022. Dr. Landry is board-certified in Small Animal Neurology. She started at Portland Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Care in August 2022.
Dr. Landry enjoys all aspects of neurology, with a special interest in managing meningitis, seizures, and intervertebral disc disease.
Dr. Landry is excited to have moved to Maine, where many of her family currently live. She spent many summers as a child on the beautiful Maine southern coast. Now she looks forwards to the many outdoor activities Maine has to offer. She has traveled through her training with her rescue dog (Bruce Wayne) and cat (Robin). She adopted both during her time as a first-year veterinary student on St. Kitts.

Dr. April Guille is a board-certified veterinary surgeon. She decided to become a veterinarian because it was the perfect blend of two of her strong interests - medicine and animal welfare. Dr. Guille obtained her bachelor's degree at the University of Colorado in Boulder and received her doctorate of veterinary medicine from The Ohio State University. Following graduation from veterinary school, she completed a rotating internship at Oradell Animal Hospital, a busy general and referral practice outside New York City.
Dr. Guille then spent a year at the University of Florida Veterinary Teaching Hospital as an Emergency Triage Clinician. While there, she published her first research paper in Veterinary Surgery. Dr. Guille completed her surgical internship at the Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center before completing her three-year surgical residency at the Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center in Philadelphia. She joined the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2008 and returned to New England to raise her family.
While Dr. Guille loves surgery of all types, her main interests include oncology surgery, wound management, and emergency surgical conditions. She loves helping both the patients and their owners through the entire process and improving her patient's quality of life through surgery.
Originally from New Hampshire, Dr. Guile loves living on the seacoast with her husband, three children, and three cats. In their free time, they like to camp, hike, ski, and travel. Dr. Guille and her family are also fluent in German. They travel as often as they can to Germany to visit family and friends.

Dr. Ashley Bryant grew up in eastern Massachusetts. She studied Social Anthropology at the University of St Andrews (Scotland). After university, she spent several years in Southern Africa working as a field guide. She received her Veterinary Degree from St George's University (Grenada). She then completed a rotating internship at MedVet New Orleans.
In her free time, Dr. Bryant enjoys spending time outdoors with her Newfoundland and Great Dane. She is looking forward to exploring Maine's wonderful nature.
A native of Lisbon Falls, Maine, Dr. Partridge obtained her bachelor's degree from Elmira College in upstate New York and her veterinary degree from Kansas State University. She then went on to complete a small animal rotating internship at North Houston Veterinary Specialists in Spring, TX, and a one-year specialty internship in oncology at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. Dr. Partridge remained at Virginia Tech to complete a three-year residency in medical oncology and become a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Oncology) in 2021. Following her residency, Dr. Partridge completed a Ph.D. in the field of Veterinary Comparative Neuro-oncology, also at Virginia Tech. Dr. Partridge has been serving as a remote consultant for PVESC since 2020 and returned home to Maine in 2022 to continue work with PVESC on-site.
In her free time, Dr. Partridge enjoys spending time outside with her husband, daughter, and two rescue dogs, Buddy and Kumar. She is also passionate about ice hockey and has been playing on various leagues since she was a kid.

Dr. Chris Narbus grew up in northwestern Maine. He received his bachelor's degree in biochemistry from the University of Maine and his DVM from Cornell. Chris spent time as a ski bum in Montana, a boat builder on the coast of Maine, and a virology researcher at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City before enrolling in veterinary school. After a year-long internship, Chris started working as an emergency veterinarian back in his home state.

Dr. Gail Mason is Chief Medical Officer of Portland Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Care (PVESC). After earning her biosciences degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, she received a Master of Arts degree in medical pharmacology from Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She holds a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Tufts University where she also completed a residency program. Dr. Mason is a Board-Certified small animal internal medicine specialist. Her professional areas of interest include diagnosis and treatment of cancer, gastroenterology, and immune-mediated and infectious disease. She also founded and directs Maine's only radioactive therapy program for cats with hyperthyroidism.
In her spare time, Dr. Gail Mason participates in clinical research including new product medication trials, and testifies as a malpractice expert in veterinary cases. She is also an avid equine enthusiast and enjoys being in the show arena whenever she can.
Dr. Kate Domenico is originally from Chicago. She attended Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine and the University of Illinois School of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 2004. During her career, Dr. Domenico has focused on soft tissue surgery, practice management, emergency and critical care. In addition to her full-time work at PVESC, she owns a mobile boat veterinary practice in Casco Bay called Island Veterinary Service, and is a Veterinary Medical Officer for the National Veterinary Response Team of the Department of Health and Human Services, deploying all over the United States for disaster mitigation. Dr. Domenico also provides emergency medical care to Secret Service and military working canines, and she is one of the lead instructors for the Working Canine Medical Skills Course, organized by the Portland Police Department. Dr. Domenico is a board member of the Maine Veterinary Medical Association.
In her free time, Dr. Domenico enjoys sailing, paddle boarding, and skiing. She shares her home with a very opinionated one-eyed French Bulldog, Capt. Jack Sparrow, and a very energetic Labrador retriever, River.

Originally from Lewiston, Maine, Dr. Kevin Chretien received two Bachelor Degrees from the University of Maine; a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Bachelor of Art in Psychology. He went on to earn his veterinary degree from the University of Glasgow, in Scotland. Following graduation, he lived in France and worked in the Frank Duncombe Lab with the University of Liege in Belgium researching equine respiratory diseases. Upon returning to Maine, Dr. Chretien practiced in Monmouth. He joined Bath-Brunswick Veterinary Associates in 2015. Dr. Chretien enjoys travel, hiking, and rock climbing.

Dr. Lisa Bourazak is a board-certified Anesthesiologist. Dr. Bourazak brings a wealth of experience to PVESC, specializing in small animal, critical, and loco-regional anesthesia, epidurals, ultrasound guided blocks, and pain management.
In her freetime, Dr. Bourazak enjoys hiking, kayaking, and exploring the great restaurants of Maine with her partner. She has three very expressive cats, Vinny, Aurora, and Eclipse (aka Sir Beefy) and her two dogs, a very opinionated Beagle, Ruth Beagle Ginsburg, and a Golden mix, Charles Darwin (aka Mr. Pants).
Dr. Marta Agrodnia completed her surgical residency at Michigan State University. She has been practicing soft tissue, orthopedic, and neurologic surgery ever since. After completing additional training in oncologic surgery at Colorado State University, Dr. Agrodnia continued to advance her skills working in a practice in Michigan with 3 oncologists and a neurosurgeon. Dr. Agrodnia has extensive experience in the various disciplines of small animal surgery and has been practicing small animal veterinary surgery in Portland Maine since 2008. Dr. Agrodnia is the proud owner of Portland Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Care, the only non-corporate multi-specialty referral hospital in Maine.
A self-professed lover of all animals, Marta Agrodnia lives in Maine with her husband, four children, cats, dogs, and horses. She has been practicing veterinary medicine since 1997 and has only done specialty and emergency work. "I love being a veterinary surgeon because every day I have the opportunity to make both animal and human lives better."
Dr. Mauria O'Brien graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine in 1996. Her undergraduate degree in biology was received from the University of Pennsylvania. After graduation from vet school, Dr. O'Brien did a combination of general practice and emergency medicine. After eight years of general practice, she did ER practice exclusively and completed a residency in Emergency and Critical Care medicine in 2008. She received board certification in ECC that same year. Dr. O'Brien was a clinical associate professor in the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois from 2008 until 2017 when she joined the staff of Animal Emergency and Specialty Care.
Dr. O'Brien likes woodworking and gardening in her off time. Her family includes her husband, three children, four dogs, and two cats.

Dr. Maxwell Bush was born and raised in Washington, DC. He attended Connecticut College, majoring in Biological Sciences. After graduation, he completed a 1-year post-baccalaureate fellowship at the National Cancer Institute at NIH. He attended veterinary school at the University of Pennsylvania, where he subsequently graduated with the American College of Veterinary Radiology award. Dr. Bush received his VMD in 2011, after that he completed a rotating internship at Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston and a surgical internship at Blue Pearl in Kansas City. He continued his training with a 3-year surgical residency at Veterinary Specialists of Rochester, obtaining board certification as a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2017. After residency, Dr. Bush joined a multi-specialty practice in upstate New York, serving as service chief for the past 3 years.
During his residency, Dr. Bush developed interests in wound healing, reconstructive surgery, and was among the first veterinarians to start using bioabsorbable orthopedic implants. His research focused on factors affecting survival with septic peritonitis. Dr. Bush also published a novel method of Achilles tendon reconstruction. His clinical interests have also grown to include minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery and thoracic surgery.
Dr. Bush shares his home with his wife (a Maine native) and their daughter. They are all excited to be back home in Maine and therefore look forward to enjoying Portland, exploring the coast, and spending time with family.

Dr. Meghan Sullivan is a board-certified veterinary surgeon with 10 years of veterinary surgery experience. Dr. Sullivan completed her internship at Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston before her surgery internship at VREC in Norwalk, CT. She completed her surgical residency at the University of Illinois.
Dr. Tyler Charbonneau graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida. Following graduation, Dr. Charbonneau completed a rigorous small animal rotating internship with VCA ARECA in Phoenix, AZ. Dr. Charbonneau then went on to complete his dermatology residency training with Dermatology for Animals in Phoenix, AZ in 2024 and will be sitting for his dermatology board examination in November of 2024.
Dr. Charbonneau's professional interests include allergy management, laser surgery, cryosurgery, and auto-immune disease management. He is especially fond of the human-animal bond and long-term relationships built with patients and clients. He greatly enjoys the wide array of treatment strategies in dermatology that allow us to maximize our compliance and efficacy while also preserving the human-animal bond.
While not working, Tyler loves fitness, being active in the outdoors, and spending time with his incredible wife, Alexis, and their pets (2 dogs and 2 cats). Tyler and his wife are very involved with CrossFit and occasionally partake in competitions. They also really enjoy traveling, hiking with their dogs, scuba diving, kayaking, and attending sporting events.
Dr. Giannetto was born and raised in Connecticut and attended college at Boston University. She attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis/St. Paul for veterinary school and graduated in 2013. She then completed her rotating internship at Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston. She completed her surgery internship and residency in Richmond, Virginia, and stayed in Richmond as an attending surgeon after her residency.
Dr. Giannetto enjoys all aspects of soft tissue and orthopedic surgery. She has experience in laparoscopy and arthroscopy and has a particular interest in wound care, thoracic surgery, fracture repair, and emergency abdominal procedures. Dr. Giannetto's research investigated the use of post-operative wound dressings in preventing surgical site infections after TPLOs and she continues to have an interest in the use of antimicrobial therapy in veterinary surgery. Dr. Giannetto has a passion for teaching veterinary students, interns and residents and has adopted the role of surgery intern and residency director at PVESC.
Dr. Giannetto and her husband Kyle met in Minnesota in 2011 and got married in 2017. They have 2 kids: 1 son and 1 bullmastiff. They enjoy traveling to Caribbean islands for vacation, going to the movies, and visiting wineries and breweries. Dr. Giannetto is happy to be back in New England closer to family and is looking forward to spending time at the beach and eating seafood again!
John MacGregor received his DVM from Cornell University in 1998. He completed an Emergency and Critical Care internship at Tufts University in 1999. After 2 years in private practice, he returned to Tufts University and completed a Cardiology residency in 2003. He is Board-Certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) as a Veterinary Cardiologist. Dr. MacGregor has authored many research manuscripts and several book chapters and has reviewed articles for three national journals. Lastly, He has served on multiple ACVIM committees and the ACVIM Board of Regents as well as the NHSPCA Board of Directors and the NH State Board of Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. MacGregor utilizes state-of-the-art diagnostic testing to determine the cause of cardiac abnormalities. Subsequently, He is able to either treat the conditions he diagnoses or obtain a referral to those who are better suited to treat those conditions.
Dr. MacGregor has a spouse with three children and lives in Seacoast, New Hampshire. He has spent part of every year of his life in Maine at a family house in the Turner area. He currently has four dogs with a variety of cardiac abnormalities and three cats who seem to be avoiding cardiac disease.

Dr. Katharine Kiger grew up in Portland, Maine. She received her bachelor's degree in Animal Science from the University of Vermont, minoring in wildlife biology and studio art. Dr. Kiger earned her veterinary degree from University College Dublin, Ireland, in 2016. After two years in general practice, Dr. Kiger transitioned to emergency medicine exclusively, falling in love with both the pace and variety of cases and referrals seen in emergency centers across Maine. She finds emergency medicine and critical care especially rewarding because it allows her to help animals when they need her the most.
Dr. Kiger lives in midcoast Maine with her three dogs and two cats. She loves spending her free time in nature, camping, traveling the world, drawing/painting, and exploring Maine on her old motorcycle from the early ‘80s.

Kim joined the PVESC team in 2016 after working in the veterinary medicine field for 30 years. Kim also spent many years in the equine industry, training and managing farms. She has an interest in team building and loves diversity in the ER department. Kim enjoys hiring and adding new technicians and assistants to the teams as well as mentoring the Department Heads and working in the ER.
Kim enjoys spending time by the lake or ocean, gardening, hiking, kayaking, and spending time with her husband and 2 Jack Russell Terriers.

Kristine has worked in veterinary hospitals since high school. Post-college Kristine became a veterinary assistant in New Jersey and continued to take on more managerial tasks until she was promoted to Hospital Manager and Business Administrator in 1997. In 2005, Kristine's family and pet menagerie made the move to the beautiful Portland, Maine, area, and she accepted a position as Hospital Manager for Portland Veterinary Specialists and then Portland Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Care when they merged in 2019. Kristine works very closely with the specialty departments, and her favorite things to do are multi-layered, from computers and project management to human resources and administration, to event planning and communication. With the firm belief that a pet or two, or eight, are necessary in everybody's home, and a life dedicated to making those pets' lives better, Kristine will remain in veterinary medicine as long as she possibly can.

Dr. Raphaël Vézina-Audette is a veterinarian from Montreal, Canada. He attended McGill University and obtained a Bachelor of Science (Anatomy and Cell Biology) and a Master of Science (Biology) in 2009 before completing his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Montreal in 2014.
After graduating as a veterinarian, Dr. Vézina completed a residency in veterinary anesthesia at the University of Pennsylvania and received his certification from the ACVAA in July 2019. His professional interests include cardiac anesthesia, pain management, and locoregional analgesia and surgery. He will be working with us as both a board-certified veterinary anesthesiologist and a surgical resident.
Robert Wilson grew up on a horse farm in New Hampshire. He received his undergraduate degree in Zoology from UNH in 1980 and his Veterinary Degree from The Ohio State University in 1984. Robert has worked in general practice in Maine and NH for many years. He developed an interest in Emergency Medicine and has practiced that exclusively for the past 8 years.
Robert has 3 grown children and lives with his wife, Marie, and their golden retriever, Jackson, in Kennebunk. He enjoys fishing, hiking, and playing hockey.
