Dr Deirdre M O'Riordan

Dr. O'Riordan returned to practice in Dublin in 2001 having trained in Respiratory Medicine at the New England Deaconess Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston and at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She subsequently worked as a Consultant Respiratory Physician at Leeds General Infirmary, Leeds, U.K., before returning to Dublin. Dr O'Riordan has been a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine at St. James's Hospital and Trinity College Dublin since 2001. Dr. O'Riordan graduated from University College Cork in 1986, became a member of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland in 1989, was awarded an M.D. by the National University of Ireland in 1993 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland in 2004. Dr O'Riordan's special areas of interest include infective and inflammatory disorders of the lung., including asthma, sarcoidosis, pulmonary fibrosis, lung and pleural infections and bronchiectasis. Dr. O'Riordan has been providing a comprehensive Respiratory service at the Beacon Clinic and Beacon Hospital since early 2007. This includes outpatient assessment and review of patients with Respiratory symptoms and full investigation including pulmonary function testing and bronchoscopy as well as access to the state of the art diagnostic imaging services available at the Beacon Hospital. In addition to seeing patients at the Beacon Clinic, Dr O'Riordan regularly consults on inpatients at the Beacon Hospital and is a member of the multidisciplinary team providing rapid access to investigation and treatment for lung cancer patients at the Beacon Hospital.

Dr Dermot McCaffrey

Dr McCaffrey graduated in medicine from Trinity College Dublin in 1989 and obtained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland (MRCPI) in 1994. He emigrated to Sydney, Australia to pursue a career in Cardiology and Heart Transplantation in 1996 and became a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians (FRCAP) in 1998. He worked as a Consultant Cardiologist in St Vincent's Heart Transplant Unit in Sydney, Australia and was an investigator in the large beta blocker heart failure trials of that era as well as pulmonary hypertension studies. He returned to Ireland in 2006 with his international heart failure experience. He was a consultant in St Vincent's University hospital until 2009 when he moved to the Beacon Hospital to set up their Heart Failure service. He is Chair of the Heart Failure Council with the Irish Heart Foundation and Chair of the NCHD Edcuation Committee for Beacon hospital involved in teaching undergraduates and post graduate doctors and nurses. He is also Director of the Cardiac Rehabilitaition service in the Beacon hospital. Dr McCaffrey has published papers on Heart Failure in major cardiology Journals including Heart, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC) , Journal of Heart Lung Transplantation and the European Jurnal of Heart Failure. Dr McCaffrey's main clinical interests are in clinical heart failure and cardiomyoapthies with special interest in echocardiography and biomarkers and he maintains a research interest in these areas.

Dr Jennifer Westrup

Dr. Westrup is the Director of Oncology, and a Consultant Medical Oncologist at Beacon Hospital. She is appointed Associate Clinical Professor at University College Dublin (UCD) and sits on the steering committee of the innovative UCD Beacon Academy. Dr. Westrup is the former Medical Director at Beacon Hospital. Dr. Westrup joined Beacon Hospital in 2007 as the first full-time Medical Oncologist. She was appointed the Section Chief of Oncology under the new hospital operator: the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre. Dr. Westrup was a member of the original Beacon Hospital Board from 2007 - 2008, served as Chairperson of the Beacon Pharmacy/Therapeutics Committee for 3 years, and as the Director of Education for Beacon Hospital from 2008 - 2014. Dr. Westrup is a member of Cancer Trials Ireland. Her past research on breast cancer has been presented at international conferences, and is published in peer reviewed journals. Dr. Westrup currently advises the Health Care Products Regulatory Clinical Sub Trials Committee. She is a member of the National Cancer Care Program, Melanoma Clinical Advisory Group.

Dr Kevin B. Moore

Dr Mary Shuhaibar

Dr. Mary Shuhaibar (LRCP&SI MB BCh NUI, MRCPI, MRCPS (Glasg), PhD) is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at the Mater Private Hospital with special interest in inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer. Following her qualification from the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin and completing her specialist medical training in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine from the RCPI, she completed her PhD in Inflammatory Bowel Disease in 2016 from Trinity College Dublin. Dr. Shuhaibar was appointed as Lecturer in Clinical Medicine and Gastroenterology at Trinity College Dublin from 2006-2010. She completed a fellowship in IBD from Oxford, UK prior to her return to Ireland. She has been involved in multiple research projects nationally and internationally and has multiple research publications in the field of IBD and colorectal cancer. She is a member of the Irish Society of Gastroenterology, the European Crohn's Colitis Organization (ECCO) and European Society of Gastroenterology Endoscopy (ESGE). Her main interests are inflammatory bowel disease, diagnostic and therapeutic Endoscopy, general Gastroenterology, quality of Care for patients with GI diseases, colorectal screening, video capsule endoscopy , Haemochromatosis and Education.

Dr Niall Breslin

Dr. Breslin graduated from Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1991. Dr. Breslin is a member of the Royal College of Physicians, in Ireland in 1994. He trained in Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Meath and Adelaide Hospitals, Dublin before completing a Fellowship in Inflammatory Bowel Disease at the University of Calgary, Canada in 1998. He spent a further period of training in The General Infirmary and St James's Hospital, Leeds. He received his Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in Gastroenterology, Hepatology and General Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians in London in October 2000. He also received his MD from Trinity College, Dublin. In 2001 he completed a Fellowship in Advanced Endoscopy at the Medical University of South Carolina, USA. Dr Breslin was appointed Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist in St James's University Hospital, Leeds in 2001 where he worked until 2005 when he was appointed as Consultant in the Adelaide & Meath Hospital, Tallaght, Dublin. His special interests include advanced endoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease, liver diseases, and gastro-intestinal cancer.

Dr Ray McDermott

Dr Ray McDermott commenced his training in Medical Oncology at the Mater Hospital, Dublin during which time he completed an MBA in Health Services Management. He went on to The Institut Curie, Paris (2000-2002) where he completed a PhD in Tumour Immunology. He subsequently completed his clinical training at Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia (2002-2004), where he furthered an interest in Genito-Urinary Oncology. During this training period, he published over twenty peer reviewed articles and Book Chapters. He took up a post as Consultant Medical Oncologist at the Adelaide Meath & National Childrens Hospital, Tallaght in July 2004. In 2006, Dr McDermott was instrumental in establishing Ireland as a main member of the Eastern Co-Operative Group, the largest clinical trials group in the USA with over 70 active studies. Dr McDermott is the Principal Investigator for Ireland in this initiative and is involved in twice yearly meetings with ECOG to develop this relationship. Dr McDermott is currently Vice-Chair of ICORG, the Irish Clinical Oncology Research Group. Under the auspices of the National Cancer Control Programme and the establishment of ‘Centres of Excellence', Dr McDermott's public hospital commitment has recently been split between AMNCH and St Vincent's University Hospital, where he pursues his interest in genito-urinary and pancreas cancers. Along with Dr Jennifer Westrup, he has been involved in the establishment and growth of the cancer services at Beacon.

Dr Sharareh Ahmadi

Dr Sharareh Ahmadi graduated from Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1995. She completed her Dermatology specialist training in Ireland and UK and then entered into the Irish Medical Council Specialist Register for Dermatology in 2005. Dr. Ahmadi is a member of Royal college of Physicians in Ireland and Member of Irish and British Association of Dermatology. She runs a private practice in Beacon Consultants Clinic and Charlemont Clinic. Her special interest is skin cancer treatment and prevention, acne and dermatitis. Mr Gary O'Toole

Gary O'Toole was appointed as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon to St Vincent's University Hospital in 2004. He is a graduate of UCD (1996) and completed his Internship and basic surgical training in St Vincent's University Hospital (1996-99). His orthopaedic training was on the Irish Specialist Training Programme in Orthopaedic Surgery (1999-2004). He then completed two specialist fellowship training programmes. The first in adult hip and knee reconstruction in the Mater Hospital in Sydney, Australia; the second in orthopaedic oncology in Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, USA. He has an interest in adult arthritis (both hip and knee) and knee sports injuries. He also has a keen interest in musculoskeletal cancer (bone and soft tissue tumours). He is actively involved in teaching and enjoys a position of Clinical Lecturer in the School of Medicine in UCD. He is widely published in orthopaedics and is a member of numerous academic societies.

Mr Maher Shuhaibar

Mr. Shuhaibar graduated from Trinity College Dublin and attained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in General Surgery. He travelled extensively to meetings and courses in Europe and North America. Mr. Shuhaibar attained the Intercollegiate Board Examination and received the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Cardiothoracic Surgery. He was a Visiting Fellow to the East Carolina Heart Institute, Brody School of Medicine(USA) and has had extensive training in Minimally Invasive and Robotic Cardiac Surgery at the prestigious Leipzig Heart Centre (Germany). Mr Shuhaibar is a founding member of Lung Cancer Initiative to provide direct access to patients suspected of having lung cancer.

Mr Michael Arthur Murphy

Mr Murphy was educated in Dublin and Wexford, graduating in medicine from UCD in 1993. He trained initially in Belfast and Dublin, and gained his MD following research in venous disease in the RCSI in 2002. He completed specialist training in vascular surgery in the University of Oxford (2002-2008) where he was Clinical Lecturer in Surgery. He has published widely and was author and co-editor of the Oxford Specialist Handbook of Vascular Surgery. Prior to joining the staff at UPMC Beacon Hospital, Mr Murphy worked as a Consultant in Manchester (Central University Hospitals), a position he was appointed to, following an endovascular fellowship in Australia.

Mr Paul Murphy

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Paul Murphy graduated from University College Dublin in June 1988. He interned at St Vincent's Hospital and was Anatomy Demonstrator in UCD Medical School 1989-90. He completed his basic surgical training in 1992, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. He received a Masters of Medical Science (2.1 honours) in the same year. He was on the Middle Grade Orthopaedic Registrar Rotation 1992-94 and gained entry onto the Senior Registrar programme 1997-99. He passed his fellowship examinations in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in 1998, and was entered into the Specialist Register of Trauma and Orthopaedics in January 2000. Mr Murphy undertook further fellowship training abroad at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, Australia, encompassing all aspects of primary and revision hip and knee joint surgery.

Mr Peter Meagher

Mr Meagher studied medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and qualified in 1989. He did his initial surgical training in vascular, orthopaedic and colorectal surgery in Dublin before deciding to specialise in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. He qualified as a General Surgeon in 1993 and was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (FRCSI). Mr Meagher offers the entire range of plastic & reconstructive surgical procedures as well as all aesthetic procedures including, breast augmentation/reduction/uplift, abdominoplasty, liposuction, face/neck lift, blepharoplasty (eyelid) surgery, rhinoplasty (nasal) surgery and otoplasty (ear) surgery. In addition he also provides non invasive treatments such as Botulinum Toxin (Botox) injections and dermal fillers to address contour abnormalities including fine lines and wrinkles. Mr Meagher is heavily committed to the teaching and training of junior doctors and nurses who have an interest in plastic surgery. Whilst at St Georges in London he was responsible for Registrar training locally, but also a member of the Pan Thames Training Scheme which oversees the training of all plastic surgeons in the South East of England.

Mr Robert Flynn

Robert Flynn FRCS(Urol), CCST in Urology is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin (1989). He undertook his basic surgical training on the Dublin Surgical Rotation (FRSCI 1993). He continued his urological training in London and South Wales in the UK (1993-1999). He was appointed Consultant Urologist at the Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend, Wales (2000-2004). He returned to Ireland as Consultant Urologist at the Tallaght Hospital and the National Rehabilitation Hospital, Dun Laoghaire in 2005. He commenced practice in the Beacon Hospital in 2006. His areas of expertise include minimally invasive surgery, including Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgery, stone disease and Neuro-urology. He offers a comprehensive upper tract service including Laparoscopic/Robotic nephrectomy, Partial Nephrectomy and Pyeloplasty and Robotic Radical Prostatectomy. His academic achievements include over 20 peer-reviewed publications. He is a Clinical Senior Lecturer at TCD, the Training Programme Director in Urology for Ireland, and an Intercollegiate FRCS(Urol) examiner since 2008 to date.

Mr. Mark Cahill

Mr. Mark Cahill is a consultant eye surgeon with a special interest in retinal diseases in The Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital and Beacon Hospital. He is also the clinical lead for Global Vision, which provides photography and grading services for Diabetic Retina Screen, the national diabetic retinopathy screening programme run by the National Screening Service (NSS). Mark qualified in University College Dublin. After completing higher surgical training in Dublin and Cork, he undertook a one year fellowship in diabetic retinopathy at the Beetham Eye Institute in the Joslin Diabetes Center, a Harvard University hospital in Boston, where he participated in research on novel treatments to prevent vision loss in patients with diabetic eye disease. Mark gained further experience in assessing and treating a wide range of eye conditions including age-related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusions and macular holes following a two year vitreo-retinal fellowship at the Duke University Eye Centre. He worked as a consultant eye surgeon in Duke University Eye Center, before returning to Ireland in 2004. Mark specialises in the treatment of patients with retinal diseases, cataract, glaucoma and general ophthalmology.

Máire Cullen

She currently sits on the Clinical Governance Committee of the Beacon Hospital Board, and was an invited member of the International Quality and Patient Safety Committee of UPMC which has oversight for quality/patient safety in the UPMC international division. Dr. Westrup lectures on the UCD Risk Management Program. Dr. Westrup graduated Cum Laude from Wake Forest University with a BSc in Biology and received her medical degree with honours at University College Dublin. She completed an Internal Medicine Residency at Boston University Medical Center, was Resident Teacher of the Year and awarded the CREST scholarship; a National Institute of Health Grant. She completed a fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at Boston University Medical Center and was honoured as Chief Fellow. Dr. Westrup is American Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology.

Prof Diarmuid Ó Ríordáin

Prof Ó Ríordáin's major areas of surgical expertise are in Cancer of the Colon and Rectum and in Minimally Invasive Robotic and Laparoscopic and Transanal Surgery for colorectal cancer. He has extensive leadership experience in this area having initiated and lead the development of multidisciplinary colorectal cancer teams at the University of Leeds, Tallaght University Hospital and at the Beacon Hospital. His expertise includes major pelvic cancer problems including pelvic exenteration and recurrent rectal cancer. In addition to his Colorectal Cancer interest, he also performs robotic, laparoscopic, minimally invasive transanal, pelvic and perianal surgery for benign colorectal disease, including colorectal polyps, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease, complex anal fistulae and rectal prolapse as well as complex restorative surgery for patients with complicated stomas and abdominal wall hernias. Prof Ó Ríordáin has had a major focus on Minimally Invasive Surgery since its inception in the 1990's. Having been to the fore in the development of laparoscopic colorectal surgery in Ireland in the early noughties, he has more recently lead the development of robotic colorectal surgery becoming the first accredited robotic colorectal surgeon in Ireland in 2017, and one of only 25 in Europe at the time, through the European Academy of Robotic Colorectal Surgery (EARCS). He leads the Robotic Colorectal Surgery Programme at Beacon Hospital, the largest experience in Ireland, with published outcomes in the Journal of Robotic Surgery. He also practices as a general surgeon providing minimally invasive and day-care surgery for both elective general surgical problems, including hernias, gallbladder disease and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and a full endoscopy service including colonoscopy and polypectomy. He provides an emergency on-call service in both the public and the private sector. Prof Ó Ríordáin is a graduate of University College Cork and having completed a Senior Registrar training programme in Colorectal and General Surgery in Ireland, and attaining Specialist Fellowship of the RCSI, he moved to the United States for further senior clinical and research experience in Colorectal and Oncologic Surgery. Prof Ó Ríordáin trained at some of the leading academic medical centres in the United States including The Mayo Clinic, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York where he was awarded the prestigious and competitively awarded International Fellowship in Surgical Oncology, where he specialised in gastrointestinal oncology. In 1998 he moved from the US to the UK, to take up the post of Consultant Surgeon and Senior Lecturer in Surgery at St James's Hospital in Leeds, Europe's largest teaching hospital, and at the University of Leeds Medical School. Here, he played a lead role in the development and organization of the Gastrointestinal and Colorectal Cancer Surgical service, Laparoscopic Surgery Programme and lead the development of the Multidisciplinary Gastrointestinal Cancer team. In 2001 he moved back to Ireland to the post of Consultant Surgeon and Lecturer in Surgery at Tallaght University Hospital and Trinity College Dublin. Prof Ó Ríordáin is Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at University College Dublin School of Medicine and also lectures in surgery at the School of Medicine, Trinity College Dublin through his affiliation to Tallaght University and Naas Hospitals. Prof Eddie Moloney

Prof Moloney graduated from University College Galway in 1993, and subsequently trained in Respiratory Medicine and General Internal Medicine (GIM) in University Teaching Hospitals throughout Dublin. He was awarded his Doctorate in Medicine (MD) from the National University of Ireland in 2002, and completed a European Respiratory Society Fellowship at the National Heart and Lung Institute at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London in 2003. He received his Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in Respiratory and GIM from the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in 2004. Prof Moloney was appointed Consultant Respiratory & GIM Physician at the Sheffield University Teaching Hospitals in 2004 where he worked until 2007 when he was appointed as Consultant Respiratory & GIM Physician at the Adelaide & Meath Hospital, Dublin, and Peamount Hospital, Co. Dublin, and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Medicine at Trinity College Dublin. Prof Moloney has been on the Irish Register of Medical Specialists in Respiratory Medicine & GIM since 2004, was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (FRCPI) in 2006, and the Fellowship of the American College of Chest Physicians (FCCP) in 2007. Prof Moloney has published over 20 peer-reviewed international papers, has co-authored 2 book chapters, and presented over 20 abstracts at international meetings on respiratory disease. Prof John G Armstrong

Professor Armstrong, Consultant Radiation Oncologist is presently the Chairman of the Irish Cancer Society. Professor Armstrong was trained at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he performed his residency, was Chief resident, and Attending for five years. He directed the lung cancer radiation research programme at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and coauthored the chapter on non-small cell lung cancer chapter in 4th edition of; "DeVita, Hellman, and Rosenberg, Cancer: Principles and Practice of Oncology," Lippincott. He is currently the Director of Research at the largest cancer facility in Ireland, St. Lukes Hospital. Professor Armstrong remains active in research as well as fulfilling the role of Medical Director for UPMC Cancer Centres Ireland Professor Armstrong has published numerous articles and has lectured extensively in the field of radiation oncology. He has been intimately involved in the rollout of new procedures involving high tech radiation therapy procedures such as Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy, and stereotactic radiosurgery.

Prof Prem Puri

Professor Prem Puri is the Newman Clinical Research Professor at the UCD School of Medicine and Medical Science, and President of the National Children's Research Centre at Our Lady's Children's Hospital. He is currently President of the World Federation of Associations of Paediatric Surgeons (WOFAPS) FOUNDATION, and Past President of the World Federation of Associations of Pediatric Surgeons (WOFAPS), and Past President of the European Paediatric Surgeons Association (EUPSA). He is Editor-in-Chief of Paediatric Surgery International, and also on the Editorial Board of several other journals. He is a member of the Health Research Board of Ireland. Prof. Puri is Honorary Fellow of a number of prestigious medical and scientific societies, including the American Surgical Association (ASA), American Academy of Paediatrics, American Paediatric Surgical Association, Japanese Association of Paediatric Surgeons, and also Argentinean, Austrian, Canadian, Czech, Croatian, Cuban, Indian and South African and Ukranian paediatric surgical associations. Prof. Puri is known internationally for his research into underlying mechanisms causing birth defects, and innovative treatments, which have benefited children all over the world. He is a multi award-winning researcher whose previous awards include People of the Years Award in Ireland and the prestigious Denis Browne Gold Medal by the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons for outstanding contribution to paediatric surgery. He has been a visiting professor to many leading universities all over the world, and invited speaker to numerous international scientific meetings. He has published 10 books, 127 chapters in textbooks and over 500 articles in peer-reviewed journals.

Prof Shiobhan Weston

Professor Shiobhan Weston received her medical degree from The Royal College of Surgeons in 1992. She completed her internship and residency in General Medicine as well as one year as a registrar in Hepatology at The Beaumont Hospital in Dublin. She left Ireland in 1996 and completed her ABIM requirements in Internal Medicine and subspecialty training in inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal motility disorders, IBS, and hepatology at The Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minnesota, followed by a 3 year fellowship in Gastroenterology and Transplant Hepatology at UCLA and the UCLA-Dumont Transplant Center in Los Angeles, California. She was awarded an Advanced Hepatology Research fellowship award and funding for formal training in clinical research, epidemiology, biostatistics, and liver transplant medicine at University of San Francisco, California. Her research more recently has focused on the study of metabolic syndrome and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Prior to her current appointment, she an Assistant Professor of Medicine at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York and The Director for the Center for Liver Disease at Winthrop-University Hospital. Professor Shiobhan Weston currently works as a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at Beacon Hospital and is Clinical Associate Professor at the School of Medicine at UCD Science. In addition to clinical medicine and teaching, she is on the Board of Directors at Beacon Consultant's Clinic in Sandyford, Dublin, Ireland.
