LUBIN & MEYER - Key Persons

Adam R. Satin

Job Titles:
  • Attorney
  • Medical Staff Member
  • Partner
Adam R. Satin is a magna cum laude graduate of Suffolk University School of Law and served on its Law Review. He has been a partner with Lubin & Meyer since 2004, specializing in medical malpractice and general liability litigation. His cases have generated almost $300 million in gross verdicts and settlements for clients of the firm. He was named one of Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly's Lawyers of the Year. Attorney Satin's record of winning at trial is unparalleled. In 2023, he won two medical malpractice trials totaling more than $12 million, including a $7.5 million verdict on behalf of the children of a Jamaican immigrant who collapsed just 45 minutes after being sent home from the hospital and a $4.6 million verdict for the children of an electrician whose MRI wasn't done in time to prevent progression of an ischemic stroke. Additionally, in one of the last cases tried in front of a jury prior to the pandemic shutting down the court system, Attorney Satin won $3.15 million in a malpractice case against a neurosurgeon who misplaced a screw during cervical spine surgery, resulting in permanent neurologic injuries. The case was featured in a Boston magazine article exposing the failure of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine to discipline negligent physicians. Attorney Satin has the unique distinction of having won three back-to-back medical malpractice trials: securing a judgment of $6.8 million on behalf of the adult children of a man who died of kidney cancer that should have been diagnosed sooner than it was; a judgment of $6 million on behalf of the family of a woman who died following surgery; and a verdict of $2 million on behalf of the family of a man who was not given proper treatment options to prevent the development of esophageal cancer. These verdicts came on the heels of Attorney Satin having won $2.84 million on behalf of the family of a man whose diagnosis of prostate cancer was significantly delayed. In 2022, Attorney Satin was recognized for having achieved two of the five largest verdicts of the year-a $5.83 million verdict for the family of a patient who suffered a heart attack after his primary care physician discontinued his aspirin regimen; and a $3,582,831 judgment for the mother of a 12-year-old boy who died after an emergency room doctor failed to transfer him in time to treat a malfunctioning shunt. Attorney Satin takes an aggressive approach to jury trials, pressing unique aspects of Massachusetts law on medical malpractice and wrongful death to the advantage of his clients that few attorneys in Massachusetts even pursue. He is believed to be the only trial attorney in Massachusetts to have obtained two awards of punitive damages in medical malpractice cases, having succeeded in both cases of convincing the jury that a healthcare provider's conduct was not only negligent, but also constituted "gross negligence." Similarly, Attorney Satin obtained a verdict on behalf of a plaintiff in Massachusetts in which the sole basis for the doctor's liability was his failure to obtain his patient's informed consent to his proposed treatment course. Attorney Satin's practice has also included multiple successful general liability cases. He obtained a $6.1 million settlement on behalf of the family of a young man killed by a drunk driver who had been served excessive amounts of alcohol at multiple bars, and an $8.4 million judgment after a jury trial against a member of the clergy who sexually molested a female congregant. Attorney Satin also leads the Appellate Department at Lubin & Meyer and has won numerous appeals before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (Dias v. Brigham Medical Associates, Inc., 438 Mass. 317 (2002); Kelly v. Foxboro Realty Associates, Inc., 454 Mass. 306 (2009); Kace v. Liang, 472 Mass. 630 (2015)), as well as appeals before the First Circuit Court of Appeals (Harrison v. United States, 284 F.3d 293 (2002) and the Massachusetts Appeals Court (Dagley, et. al. v. Murphy, et. al., 2013-P-0625, 2014; Parsons v. Ameri, et al., 97 Mass. App. Ct. 96 (2020); Larkin v. Dedham Medical Associates, Inc., 93 Mass. App. Ct. 661 (2018)), all resulting in important decisions that have shaped the development of the common law of Massachusetts. The Larkin case was one of the many appeals in which Attorney Satin has successfully defended large jury verdicts obtained by Lubin & Meyer attorneys. In Larkin, Attorney Satin successfully defeated the claim of a physician's practice group that it was entitled to a $20,000.00 cap on damages due to its alleged "charitable" status, resulting in a judgment in excess of $33M instead being affirmed. Additionally, Attorney Satin has been recruited by the Massachusetts Association of Trial Attorneys to be the lead author on amicus briefs the organization sought to file in connection with issues of great importance to the plaintiff's bar, including notably the case of Parr v. Rosenthal, 475 Mass. 368 (2016), which extended the statute of limitations for plaintiffs in medical malpractice cases and for which Attorney Satin was honored with the "President's Award" from the Massachusetts Association of Trial Attorneys. Attorney Satin is frequently invited to teach practicing lawyers on a wide range of topics. He is co-chair of the Annual Personal Injury Conference sponsored by Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education and also has served as the program chair for its "Courtroom Presence" seminar. Attorney Satin is admitted to practice law in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He has been listed annually by Super Lawyers since 2012, having previously earned Massachusetts Rising Stars recognition from Super Lawyers from 2005-2011. He has been named to Boston magazine's "Top Lawyers" list in 2023, 2023 and 2024.
