Alice Evans Before

Close Biography of Patient and Public Involvement Manager Alice Evans Before joining Health Technology Wales, Alice designed a curriculum of skills training for paediatric clients of the Posture and Mobility All Wales Service in partnership with patients and families. Afterwards, Alice worked in continuing healthcare (CHC) with south and east localities to develop training to improve understanding of CHC and dementia care across South Wales in partnership with care home networks and NHS. Now at Health Technology Wales, Alice is responsible for providing information support to patients, patient organisations, carers and members of the public.

Antonia Needham Antonia

Close Biography of Health Services Researcher Antonia Needham Antonia joined HTW in July 2022. Before this, she has worked on multiple research projects focusing primarily on adult and child safeguarding in the Welsh context with the NISB and Welsh Government. Antonia has an MSc in Social Science Research Methods and Sociology and a BSc (Econ) in Politics from Cardiff University. Antonia first became interested in health services research during her MSc, which focused on public health approaches to violence.

Caron Potter Caron

Close Biography of Executive Assistant Caron Potter Caron has front-line experience of secondary care service, having worked throughout NHS Wales. She was previously an Executive Assistant for a Professor of Surgery. She was also an Admin Manager, managing a team of 10 and working to reduce patient waiting lists. She has developed knowledge of the personnel function, introducing development appraisals and sickness absence procedures. Caron continues her development of implementing procedures and processes at Health Technology Wales to meet organisational requirements.

Charlotte Bowles Charlotte

Close Biography of Health Services Researcher Charlotte Bowles Charlotte joined Health Technology Wales as a Health Services Researcher in June 2021. She was previously an International Health Evidence Reviewer at Public Health Wales, where she worked on the production, methodology and analysis of International Horizon Scanning reports. Charlotte has a Master's degree in Social Science Research Methods from Cardiff University and also graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University with a degree in Social Care.

Diana Milne Diana

Close Biography of Communications Manager Diana Milne Diana joined Health Technology Wales as Communications Officer in October 2021. After graduating from Warwick University with a History degree she trained as a journalist. Diana then worked as a news reporter on regional newspapers and spent three years working as a journalist in the UAE. On her return to the UK, she edited business publications and wrote features for regional magazines. Before joining HTW she was PR Officer at ASH (Action on Smoking and Health) Wales.

Dr Claire Davis

Close Biography of Health Services Researcher Dr Claire Davis Before joining Health Technology Wales, Claire supported the All Wales Medicines Strategy Group (AWMSG) in the appraisal of medicines for 10 years. Whilst there, Claire developed a passion for Patient & Public Involvement (PPI) and led in this area, creating the first PPI strategy for AWMSG. Her aim is to set up effective PPI in Health Technology Wales. Claire has a PhD in Pharmacology, and previous experience in clinical research and academia.

Dr Clare England

Close Biography of Health Services Researcher Dr Clare England Clare joined Health Technology Wales as a Health Services Researcher in January 2023. She was previously a Research Fellow in Nutrition at the National Institute of Health and Care Research Biomedical Research Centre, University of Bristol, where she led and collaborated on clinical nutrition research projects, using a wide range of methodologies, with a major focus on systematic and scoping reviews. Prior to this, Clare trained and worked as a dietitian, specialising in Diabetes Education, before undertaking a PhD in Social Policy from the University of Bristol, during which time she developed a short dietary screener for people with type 2 diabetes.

Dr David Jarrom

Close Biography of Principal Researcher Dr David Jarrom David joined Health Technology Wales in February 2018. He heads up our horizon scanning function, as well as methodological development within the organisation. After completing his PhD in biomedical science, David has spent the last 10 years working in evidence-based medicine and health technology assessment for a number of Welsh and UK organisations, including NICE and AWMSG.

Dr Greg Hammond

Close Biography of Health Services Researcher Dr Greg Hammond Greg has a BSc in optometry, qualifying as an optometrist in 2014, and worked in community practice for several years. He returned to Cardiff University and gained his PhD in structural biology/vision science in 2021. During his PhD, he undertook a placement with Welsh Government assessing the evidence for sight test frequency for children to inform a policy position. Following this, he worked as a policy manager for optometry and audiology in Welsh Government, where he led on optometry reform.

Dr Sian Cousins

Close Biography of Senior Health Services Researcher Dr Sian Cousins Sian joined Health Technology Wales in July 2023. Sian was previously a Research Fellow in the Surgical Innovation theme of the NIHR Bristol Biomedical Research Centre where she worked on developing methods to facilitate innovation and optimise the safe and transparent introduction of invasive procedures and devices into NHS clinical practice. Sian also worked on developing methods and guidelines for the design and conduct of placebo-controlled surgical trials to inform evidence-based practice. Sian completed her PhD in Experimental Neuroscience at Imperial College London and held post-doctoral positions at Kings College London and University College London.

Dr Susan Myles

Close Biography of Director Dr Susan Myles Susan has been engaged in applied health technology assessment for 25 years. Before joining Health Technology Wales, she led the development and work of the Scottish Health Technologies Group. Susan has received scholarships from the Department of Health and Medical Research Council, and is a previous recipient of a Harkness Fellowship in Health Care Policy. She holds qualifications in Economics (BA), Health Economics (MSc & PhD) and Epidemiology (PgDip).

Elise Hasler Since

Close Biography of Information Specialist Elise Hasler Since graduating with an Information Studies degree from Aberystwyth University, Elise has worked within the health sector for over 20 years - 15 of those working on National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines. Beginning her career as a librarian at Herefordshire Clinical Library, she then became Information Specialist at the National Collaborating Centre for Cancer and later joined the National Guideline Alliance. Elise joined HTW in September 2021 and enjoys working on projects that will make a difference to patient care.

Hayley Bennett Hayley

Close Biography of Health Economist Hayley Bennett Hayley joined Health Technology Wales as a health economist in 2022. She previously worked for 10 years in consultancy firms and at Swansea Centre for Health Economics, researching the health economic value of healthcare interventions and performing evaluations for publication and HTA. Hayley first became interested in healthcare modelling during her MSc in Operational Research.

Jenni Washington Following

Close Biography of Information Specialist Jenni Washington Following a degree in Mathematics, a love of reading set Jenni on the path of Librarianship and Information Science. Her understanding of set theory and a logical mind makes her ideally suited to online searching. She worked as an Information Scientist for the Ministry of Defence, the consumer goods industry and the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network, before finding a home at Health Technology Wales.

Close Biography of Health Services Researcher Jessica Williams Jessica joined Health Technology Wales as a Health Services Researcher in November 2019. She was previously a Medical Writer at the All Wales Therapeutics and Toxicology Centre, supporting the health technology assessment of medicines and the identification of new medicines. This experience has led to Jessica's involvement in the horizon scanning process at Health Technology Wales. Jessica has a Master's degree in Natural Science, and previous experience in clinical research.

June Price June

Close Biography of Business Operations Manager June Price June is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) with 20 years' experience in Human Resources. She joined HTW as Business Operations Manager, moving from the Workforce and Organisational Development team of Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. Previously, June worked on the Major Trauma Centre and Dragons Heart resourcing projects. As well as playing a role in shaping a developing organisation, June's role is to oversee the operational and administrative function of the organisation.

Katie McDermott

She has brought extensive experience in process and product development, and implementing new systems and procedures. Prior to joining the team, Katie worked at the Wales Deanery where she was responsible for the recruitment and programme management for doctors undertaking specialty training across Wales.

Close Biography of Health Services Researcher Leona Batten Leona joined HTW as a Health Services Researcher in March 2023. Before this, she worked as a Trial Manager on large international Phase III oncology randomised controlled clinical trials at Cardiff University and the Institute of Cancer Research. Leona has a BSc in Biomedical Science from the University of Reading and is currently undertaking a Masters in Public Health at Cardiff University.

Lisa King Lisa

Close Biography of Senior Programme Manager Lisa King Lisa has a degree in Genetics and spent the first part of her career awarding Research and Development (R&D) funding to companies. After moving on to support EU and UK collaborative R&D projects, Lisa joined Bristol University where she set up and managed Bristol Health Partners Academic Health Science Centre. Lisa is delighted to have joined the HTW team in December 2021 and will lead our Programme Management Team. Lisa is passionate about collaborative working and looks forward to applying her knowledge and experience to ensure HTW delivers its strategic goals.

Llinos Jones

Close Biography of Welsh Language Translator Llinos Jones After graduating in Spanish from Aberystwyth University, Llinos moved to Cardiff, where she has been working as a Welsh language translator for many years. She works for Velindre University NHS Trust four days a week and for Health Technology Wales one day per week, providing a Welsh language translation service to the organisation.

Mafalda Gordo Mafalda

Close Biography of Business Support and Communications Assistant Mafalda Gordo Mafalda graduated from the University of Lisbon with a degree in the Sciences of Communication and Culture before going on to work as quality control analyst at the global market research firm Nielsen. She joined HTW in November 2021 after moving to Cardiff, initially on a temporary contract to assist the Communications Officer with digital content and preparing the Annual Report. She was then appointed as a full time Communications and Business Support Assistant.

Matthew Prettyjohns Matthew

Close Biography of Chair Professor Peter Groves Peter is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at the University Hospital of Wales. He is also Chair of the MHRA Devices Expert Advisory Committee and the NICE Medical Technologies Advisory Committee, and has a great interest in the regulation and health technology assessment of innovative medical devices in the context of the UK NHS. Peter is committed to teaching and research, and has published widely on the scientific basis for medical technology development and utilisation.
