Helen Young Hayes - CEO, Founder

Job Titles:
  • CEO
  • FOUNDER
  • Member of the BOARD
  • Member of the Leadership Team
  • Founder and CEO of Activate
Helen is the founder and CEO of ActivateWork. ActivateWork's mission is to connect diverse, qualified talent to leading employers through rigorous skills training, community resources, and professional and life skills coaching. ActivateWork is the culmination of Helen's past for-profit and nonprofit experience, harnessing the power of the marketplace to achieve profound social impact. By moving individuals to sustained economic mobility and professional success, ActivateWork creates triple wins for job seekers, employers, and the community. The daughter of Chinese immigrants, Helen is a believer in and the embodiment of the American Dream. But the American Dream - a life of flourishing - is elusive, as generational poverty becomes the default for too many men and women from underrepresented populations. ActivateWork bridges the gap between individual potential and realized success by matching and placing individuals into self-sustaining careers and through intensive coaching of personal, professional, and financial skills. ActivateWork seeks not only to advance economic and professional success but to transform lives through the learning and mastery of new habits, mindsets, and disciplines. Helen is a 20-year veteran of the financial industry. She was the portfolio manager of the flagship Janus Worldwide Fund, Janus Overseas Fund, and related assets totaling approximately $50 billion at Janus Capital, a mutual fund company headquartered in Denver, Colorado. She also served as managing director of investments, heading up the 100-person research and investment arm of Janus Capital, encompassing equities, fixed income, money market, and trading. In 2018, Helen was selected as one of the Denver Business Journal's Outstanding Women in Business for her leadership at ActivateWork (previously Activate Workforce Solutions). In 2021, she was awarded the Colorado Technology Association APEX Awards Talent Champion of the Year for launching ActivateWork's tuition-free technology training and professional development program to create equitable paths in IT for individuals seeking careers and employers seeking talent. Helen Young Hayes is the founder and CEO of ActivateWork and a leading force in Colorado's Inclusive Economy Initiative. With an impressive portfolio of titles, Hayes started the organization in 2016 to help connect underrepresented populations with full-time, full-benefit careers in their communities. Hayes has been a lifelong trailblazer. As a child of Chinese immigrants in the Mississippi south, she was the first Asian American girl to graduate her high school, the first of her family to attend and graduate from an Ivy League school, and the first Asian American woman to manage a global multi-billion dollar fund during her time at Janus Henderson. Since then, Hayes has dedicated the second half of her career to building paths to life-changing careers for her Denver community. Hayes strongly believes that talent is equally distributed, but opportunity is not. She and her team started ActivateWork with the vision to activate individuals into realizing their fullest potential through the dignity of work. "Businesses have forgotten that the jobs they create and the wealth that is created through those jobs is one of the most potent forces of social good." Hayes and her team encourage employers to rebuild the Colorado economy to make it work for people from all communities and backgrounds.

Randy Cordova

Randy Cordova graduated this spring from ActivateWork powered by Per Scholas with his IT Support certification. Randy had been interested in tech all his life but only became involved in the field in recent years. He had previously worked a variety of jobs, including construction, plumbing, and customer service. While pursuing a bachelor's degree in computer information systems, Randy realized that his education was not actually providing him with the experience he needed to secure a job. All of the jobs Randy looked at also required specific certifications he wanted to earn, but he found it difficult to find the motivation to pursue them alone. Randy joined ActivateWork's IT Support cohort and found it to be exactly what he needed. Randy credits the structure and discipline provided by a classroom setting and the support from his colleagues and the team at ActivateWork for helping him complete the course. He enjoyed the diversity of his cohort and was overwhelmed by the support that the program provided for him. "The whole program - the professional development, the mock-interviews - it gave me the confidence that I needed," Randy recalled. "It changed the way that I think. Instead of being intimidated, I had confidence, and I had a whole team of people helping me with what I needed. Doing [ActivateWork] was probably one of the best choices I ever made." Since graduating, Randy has begun working full-time as an IT service desk analyst at Centura Health. He is interested in potentially pursuing Networking, Cloud Support, and Cybersecurity certifications and is currently taking an alumni NET+ course through ActivateWork. "I feel like my path is on the right track for everything I need to do, so I'm very excited," Randy reflected. "My confidence is up! This was a great opportunity. My whole cohort was so intelligent, and the teachers were great. I think this really changed my life."
