In my junior year of high school, I was looking for summer work. I responded to a want ad in the Sunday Philadelphia Inquirer for a painter's helper at $4 an hour for painting contractor William Cherry, whose company operated in West Philadelphia. He was a wonderful man-tolerant and patient. Bill taught me the rudiments of painting along with some tricks of the trade. I will always remember him fondly. I found that I liked painting, it fit for me, and I gained an appreciation for the trade. I continued to work for Bill the following summer, and after that summer, I ventured out on my own with the backing and support of my father. That was the fall of 1965; I have been painting now for over 50 years. If practice makes the master, I qualify. I am one of eight children, five boys and three girls.
