THUNDERCLOUD STUDIO

Thundercloud Studio: a collaborative artshed in Berkeley California -- Ceramics by Mark Goudy and Liza Riddle. Mark Goudy's work is an exploration in handbuilt asymmetric organic shapes, using the enclosed vessel as the basic form. The material is (low-fired) stone-burnished porcelain clay, unglazed, with surface markings created by carbon and water-soluble metal salts which permeate the clay body. These rounded shapes are meant to be held, and when set on a flat surface, come to rest at their own natural balance point. Liza Riddle coil builds her ceramic vessels using smooth, porcelaineous clay. Some pieces are carefully burnished and polished, others are sanded to create a fine, matte texture. Her pireces are painted with water soluble metals -- iron, nickel, cobalt and other salts -- chemicals that permeate the clay and reveal the earth's elemental palette after firing.
